As of January 10th , 2012, the lake ice depth (13″) remained adequate to allow equipment safely back onto the ice surface despite last week’s warm weather.  Winter maintenance on the skating surfaces started again on January 10th and will take a couple of weeks to provide proper lake ice for skating if we can keep some colder nights and receive some snow ground cover to prevent sand erosion onto the ice surface.  Maintenance on the two hockey rinks will be ongoing each week as weather permits.   The pleasure skating path and rink access paths will not be ready until we have 16″ of ice depth and can flood the pathways with the water truck.   The contractor will continue to flood the rinks by pumping water from the lake by hose  until the water truck can safely access the rinks.

The Thin Ice signage at the West Beach and the red warning flag have been removed and  members are welcome to access the ice surface as long as the green flag is displayed at the West Beach.

Please keep in mind that this is lake ice in its early maintenance stages and not the same quality as you would find at an indoor hockey rink.  There will be minor cracking of the ice as is normal on any lake or pond and you will need to educate your family members to skate with caution.  Please skate at your own risk.

We have added a second smaller rink this year for families with younger children who wish to skate or play hockey without safety concerns of doing so on the larger hockey rink with the more experienced skaters and hockey players.  Please respect the intent of the smaller rink.

Additional rubber skate matting has been ordered to create a pathway from the skate change benches to the fire pit and will be installed upon arrival in Calgary so that you can warm up as needed without having to remove your skates.

Tthe West Beach Park, washrooms and playgrounds are also open daily for your enjoyment.
